The SÍne Fada.

We admit that it is a nuisance, that sÍne fada. Even some of your editors are lazy about having to use Insert in Word to write Tinteán properly. But now it is being given legal protection in Ireland, with all public bodies required to use it where appropriate and put it on their computer keyboards: Éire, Fianna Fáil, Seán …

How about insisting on a similar rule for the apostrophe in our many O’ surnames. This would apply to airlines and travel companies and hundreds of other places.

The All Irelands.

They are over and the champions have been crowned: Limerick hurlers 1-31 to 2-26 over Kilkenny: Kerry footballers 0-20 to 0-16 over Galway. For the first time, the finals were played in July this year. Congratulations to both teams from far away.

Brian Cowen

He was a Fianna Fáil TD for Laois-Offaly, taking on a number of ministries before replacing Bertie Ahern as leader of his party in 2008. The Irish Independent described him as ‘the worst Taoiseach in the history of the state.’ He was back in the news again recently, recovering from a 12-month health battle that saw him in hospital for months. Initially using a wheelchair, he is now on a crutch and determined to regain full mobility.
