Ryan O’Shaughnessy performed a song for Eurovision 2018 grounded in Ireland’s previous winning tradition, the romantic ballad, but lifted into the modern Contest mainstream by referencing the end of a gay romance.
No doubt it is the music of ‘You Raise Me Up’, but there is something in the lyrics also.

RTE’s choice of Molly Sterling, despite her elimination in the semi-final, augurs well for the future for Ireland at the Contest after some years of appearing to lose its way. Ireland is back on track!
