Further information: One of Australia’s most controversial politicians in the early years of the Commonwealth, Hugh Mahon has the dubious distinction of being the only member expelled from the federal parliament. This followed a speech he made in 1920 critical of British rule in Ireland. But there is much more to this incredibly complex Irish-Australian patriot, pressman and politician than this single spectacular event for which he is mostly remembered, if at all. In this lecture Jeff Kildea will explore Mahon’s life in Ireland, America and Australia to uncover the influences that led to Mahon’s spectacular exit from Australian politics.
