Easter Rising film and Symposium in Sydney

15 June 2016,  The screening of a major documentary, 1916: the Irish Rebellion, introduced by its producers, visiting from USA. Following the screening we will have a panel discussion on the documentary and the legacy of the Rising in general.
When:  15 June, 2016, 5pm.
Where: Ritchie Theatre, John Niland Scientia Building, UNSW

And an academic symposium entitled ‘The Easter Rising and Cultures of Anti-Imperialism’ with a number of visiting and local academic speakers.  This symposium addresses anti-imperialist aspects of the Easter Rising of 1916, both in its conception and its impact. To what extent was the Rising influence by anti-imperialist ideas? How did it influence other anti-imperialist movements around the world? What about responses to the Rising in Australia and in Irish-Australia? How were anti-imperialist writers and intellectuals, such as James Joyce, inspired by the Rising? Drawing together a range of international academic experts, approaching this topic from a variety of perspectives, this event will offer fresh perspectives on a key moment in cultural and intellectual history.

Everyone is warmly welcome to both days, though the symposium will be more specialised and academic than the public event on the evening of the 15th. Admission is free for both days but registration is essential. Please follow the links.
