Is le croí trom a chuirtear in iúl go bhfuil ár gcomhghleacaí, an Dr Muireann Ní Bhrolcháin, tar éis bháis, go hanabaí. Ball de Roinn na Sean-Ghaeilge (nó Roinn na Sean- agus na Meán-Ghaeilge mar a bhí) ab ea í an Dr Ní Bhrolcháin, a shaothraigh an léann in Ollscoil Mhá Muad ar feadh breis is tríocha bliain. Le linn an ama sin chuir sí oiliúint ar na glúinte mac léinn i litríocht ársa na Gaeilge. Is é ról na mban sa litríocht sin, sa mhiotaseolaíocht agus sa stair ba mhó spéis léi. Bhí mar thoradh ar a saineolas agus ar a cuid teagaisc an leabhar Introduction to Early Irish Literature a foilsíodh in 2009. Ní dhéanfaidh na mic léinn a oileadh faoina cúram dearmad ar an bhfonn lena dtabharfadh sí faoin teagasc. B’ann don fhiuchadh foinn seo taobh amuigh den seomra ranga chomh maith, mar ba léir san fheachtasaíocht gan géilleadh a rinne sí chun Teamhair na Rí agus Scrín Cholm Cille a chaomhnú ina séadchomarthaí beo ar oidhreacht na hÉireann. Is mór an briseadh é a bás don Roinn. Thairis a saothrú léannta, b’údar bisiúil í a scríobh iliomad leabhar do dhaoine óga sa Ghaeilge sin ba dhúchas di. Cuimnímid go speisialta ar a muintir ghaoil ag an tráth seo.

With sadness we report the untimely death of our colleague Dr Muireann Ní Bhrolcháin. Dr Ní Bhrolcháin was a member of the Department of Early Irish (formerly Department of Old and Middle Irish) and the University in Maynooth for over three decades, during which she taught generations of students about the literature of Medieval Ireland. Her particular interest lay in the role of women in literature, myth and history. The epitome of her teaching is the Introduction to Early Irish Literature which she published in 2009. Her students will not forget her enthusiasm for the subject, an enthusiasm that very often transcended the classroom, for instance in her unflinching campaigning for the preservation of the Hill of Tara and the Skreen Valley as a living monument of Irish cultural heritage. Her death is a great loss to the Department. Aside from her academic career, Dr Ní Bhrolcháin was also a prolific writer of children’s literature in her native Irish language. Our thoughts are with her family.
