Melbourne

You’re spoilt for choice in Melbourne, and with no overlapping of dates, you may fit in a season of differently themed celebrations, and you might even avoid the green beer.

The Melbourne Celtic Club is staging a family-friendly St Patrick’s Family Day, a free event, on 13 March, 11am – 3pm at RMIT Courtyard (right by Old Melbourne Jail). For more details, see https://members.celticclub.com.au/eventdetails/12867/st-patricks-family-day

You’ll need to register, but anyone is free to go. It’s free. There’ll be music, song, dance, food and drinks. Lots of seating to sit down and relax, catch up with friends, and there’s lots of free activities for the kids as well. They can have a go at the ancient Irish sport of Hurling, some Gaelic Football, join in with the music, marvel at our ‘Riverdancers’, or find out more about our social and cultural activities over a refreshment: where to see great Irish Films, where to chat about Irish Literature, how you can learn the Irish Language?

Comhaltas Patrick’s Day Hooley is on Thursday 17 March at the usual stomping grounds of St. Philip’s Anglican Hall, 146 Hoddle St. Abbotsford (near Collingwood Town Hall) from 7:00-10:00 p.m. You’re invited to join the craic with the famous Comhaltas music, dancing, fancy dress parade and supper. (BYO drinks and nibbles.) Cost $10-15 (non-members); free for kids.

And from Canberra – The Embassy’s Virtual Celebration, open to all.

A message from the Second Secretary:

A Chairde,

As we enter into St Patrick’s Day season, I want to wish you all the very best with any events that you may be planning, or attending. For many of us, this may be the first St Patrick’s Day we have officially marked since 2019, and I wish you a safe, and enjoyable time.

The Embassy of Ireland in Canberra is planning a Virtual St Patrick’s Day Reception to be held online in parallel to the many parades and festivals taking place across the country in the coming weeks. The Virtual Reception will launch at 10am AEST on 17 March 2022 and will be available online at: https://ireland.ie/australia

The virtual reception will include remarks from An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, as well as His Excellency, Ambassador of Ireland to Australia, Tim Mawe. It will include cultural performances from Ireland and Australia, as well as greetings from a range of diaspora across the country.

We would be grateful if all organisations could promote the virtual reception on their social media, and within their commnuity, and we hope that this reception will reach all corners of Australia. We are aware of the difficulties, exacerbated over the past two years, of reaching our community resident all across Australia and we hope that this virtual reception will help to unite us in marking St Patrick’s Day 2022.

Bígí linn agus muid ag ceiliúradh ár Lá Násiúnta, Lá Fhéile Pádraig, ar líne i mbliana. Caith súil ar: https://ireland.ie/australia ar LFP, agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh!

Le gach dea-ghuí,

Cellena Connolly-Moynihan
