Learn how to kick-start your genealogy project!

Enthusiastic volunteers gathered in Killeagh on Wednesday and Thursday last week with the start of the digital survey of the headstones in the graveyard. Eachtra Archeological Projects supported by SECAD demonstrated the art of reading headstones sometimes over 250 years old much to the delight of the participants who thought there might be family connections somewhere in the distant past.

L to R: Kevin O'Shea, Robin Turk (Eachtra), Anne O'Neill, Claire Geany, Pat Barron, Brian Talbot, George Fogarty, Sean Mc Carthy, Front Row: Mary Fitzgerald, Jacinta Kiely (Eachtra).

The Historic Graves project is a community based grassroots Heritage project aimed at making inscriptions easily available on the Internet with the use of GPS positioning. It  is endorsed by Ireland Reaching Out in the hope of stimulating local and overseas interest in families getting together and enjoying shared interests. Working with Jacinta Kiely and Robin Turk, participants soon learned how to survey headstones and with the use of mirrors and torches to read inscriptions. Centuries old art work on the headstones provided fascinating and enjoyable reading.

The surveyed information is available on Historic Graves . Contact Grace Fox at SECAD on (021)04613432 if you would like to volunteer in the South and East Cork area.
