What’s On in June and beyond…

Bloomsday in Melbourne is thrilled to announce our brand new play, Samuel Beckett And The Rainbow Girl, the moving story of James Joyce’s talented daughter Lucia, her desperate passion for dance and her doomed love affair with Samuel Beckett.

Tickets on sale from Saturday 11 April 2024. You are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

ABOUT THE SHOW
It’s late 1920s Paris and Lucia, muse and only daughter of notorious banned novelist James Joyce, is poised to succeed as a daringly original dancer.  Into this dysfunctional artistic household arrives alluring young Dubliner Samuel Beckett – enigmatic, hypereducated, a writer seeking his own literary voice.  He finds himself drawn into the older writer’s web… and at the same time becomes the reluctant subject of Lucia’s increasingly obsessive amorous gaze.  A series of romantic misunderstandings, at first comic but increasingly tragic, strip Lucia of her nascent career and, her family and love interest both lost to her, she spirals into madness.

In addition to the centrepiece of the festival, the play, Bloomsday in Melbourne will also host a seminar and lunch.

Poking the Bear

The impact of censorship and the Obscenity Trial on Joyce’s revisions of Ulysses

Speaker: Honorary Associate Professor Frances Devlin-Glass

James Joyce was notoriously resistant to bending to censorship, even when it was demanded by friendly patrons like Ezra Pound, and much more so when he was institutionally punished. Ulysses’ publication in 1922 in Paris, following the high-stakes affray in the US courts which started in 1921, was a miracle. This presentation looks at Joyce’s response to his critics as he revised the novel, and argues that censorship delivered a radically different, and more daring, novel from what we might have had.

Presented by Bloomsday in Melbourne Inc. at the Celtic Club at The Wild Geese, Level 1 Members’ Lounge, 29 Sydney Road, Brunswick.
