Melbourne Irish Studies Seminar
WEDNESDAY 22nd May [note new time] 4.30pm (Melbourne time) Hybrid event – in person and zoom SPEAKER: Prof. Dianne Hall, Victoria University, Melbourne “Stories of migration and return in 1930s Ireland: The Schools Collection”. In this paper I will analyse the stories that people in 1930s Ireland told migration to Australia and other diasporic destinations. In the 1930s, school teachers in Ireland were asked to set children the task of talking to older people in their communities about the past. Among the thousands of stories that were collected are a rich vein of narratives about migration. I will analyse these narratives for information about returned migrants from Australia, who were usually portrayed as rich and successful. I will also examine some of the magical or folkloric stories that feature Australia as a far off destination where anything might happen. As always this is a free public seminar open to every one. It starts at 4.30pm Jabiru room, Newman College, Swanston St, Carlton.Or join via zoom Join Zoom Meetinghttps://victoriauniversity.zoom.us/j/89614180217?pwd=RUgxeDZuVDdLZGxCRTJ3MXVNT3VLQT09 |

Bloomsday in Melbourne is thrilled to announce our brand new play, Samuel Beckett And The Rainbow Girl, the moving story of James Joyce’s talented daughter Lucia, her desperate passion for dance and her doomed love affair with Samuel Beckett.
Tickets on sale from Saturday 11 April 2024.
| ABOUT THE SHOW It’s late 1920s Paris and Lucia, muse and only daughter of notorious banned novelist James Joyce, is poised to succeed as a daringly original dancer. Into this dysfunctional artistic household arrives alluring young Dubliner Samuel Beckett – enigmatic, hypereducated, a writer seeking his own literary voice. He finds himself drawn into the older writer’s web… and at the same time becomes the reluctant subject of Lucia’s increasingly obsessive amorous gaze. A series of romantic misunderstandings, at first comic but increasingly tragic, strip Lucia of her nascent career and, her family and love interest both lost to her, she spirals into madness. In addition to the centrepiece of the festival, the play, Bloomsday in Melbourne will also host a seminar and lunch. AN ASTONISHING DEBUT PLAY IN A PRODUCTION DIRECT FROM OUR DOWNSTAIRS THEATRE.
Northern Ireland, 1987. Deirdre is stuck – between arguments, nations, and the lives she almost lived. But when her old schoolfriends gather in her kitchen yet again for Christmas Eve, their growing differences push to the surface a powder-keg, waiting the tiniest spark. And then one of them turns up with her surprise fiancé.
He’s English.
Set against the backdrop of The Troubles, this brilliant debut play is an unforgettable drama of home, friends, the decision to leave or stay, and the possibility of forgiveness.
Grace Chapple’s Never Closer premiered Downstairs at Belvoir in 2022 as part of 25A and I haven’t seen anything so assured and accomplished in ages. It’s a tight, mature piece of writing with some finely-detailed performances in an exquisitely directed production by Hannah Goodwin. So, in a grand tradition, we’re bringing it Upstairs. This is a chance to see a thoughtful, crafted new play by an Australian writing of her ancestral land. In six characters and a single room, Grace catches the tremors of a whole country and a whole time – with some striking resonances for here today. – Eamon
