This course is designed to meet headlong the fears of those who’ve been persuaded that Joyce’s is just for brainiacs and nerds. Ulysses’ reputation is a formidable read is very unfortunate, making the novel probably the most admired and least read of modernity. Bloomsday in Melbourne is committed to demystifying Joyce, and one of its many activities is running courses at many different levels for the raw novice and also the aficionado. This course is an intensive, with four sessions over 6 hours, and will focus on where Joyce fits into literary modernism, and some of his literary experiments and radical thinking. The course aims to get a good handle on the Nausicaa, Cyclops, Circe and Ithaca episodes of Ulysses, and intends to empower readers to enjoy its iconoclastic fun and its inventiveness. It builds on a course held in February for beginning readers.
