A Celebratory Tenth Irish Film Festival in Australia, 2024

There is an exciting range of new films screening this year in many cities around Australia: in CINEMAS: 15-17 November in Brisbane; 22-24 November in Canberra, and ONLINE from 17-October – 3 November, wherever you are in Australia.

The Opening Night film in Melbourne is the film, That They May Face the Rising Sun, based on the novel by John McGahern and directed by Pat Collins. An Australian Premiere.

IRISH FAMINE GIRLS COMMEMORATION

WILLIAMSTOWN, MELBOURNE.

SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2024 – 2PM-4PM

FAMINE ROCK, BURGOYNE RESERVE, THE STRAND (NEAR STEVEDORE STREET), WILLIAMSTOWN

The annual commemoration of the Irish Famine Orphan Girls is a free event, open to everyone, featuring music and special presentations. There is also the traditional Laying of the Flowers ceremony; a touching tribute to the brave Irish Famine orphan girls who arrived in Hobson’s Bay with the Earl Grey Scheme 1848-1850.  Descendants traditionally engage in the wreath-laying.

This year is the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the ships New Liverpool and Pemberton in 1849.

St. Andrew’s Ceilidh Dance 2024

Our St. Andrew’s HIGH ENERGY ceilidh dance is at Collingwood Town Hall on FRIDAY 29th November 2024. Dance the night away with music by the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club. *You’ll need to be physically fit & wear flat shoes – it’s a better workout than a night at the gym!

Drinks & crisps will be available to purchase at the Ceilidh. Liquor licence & health regulations prohibit BYO food & drink to the venue. Kids snacks OK. Doors open at 7.30pm – 10.30pm finish

LAKE SCHOOL KOROIT January 2-7, 2025

THE HISTORIC IRISH TOWN OF KOROIT

Lake school is held in the town of Koroit – outstanding musicians, singers and dancers from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Geelong, Ballarat and Warrnambool! Learn to play Irish flute, fiddle, tin whistle, uilleann pipes, bodhran (Irish drum), guitar, banjo, harp and songwriting. Play in a ceilidh band. Join a hot young Celtic band! Play, session and sing with hundreds of musicians from all around Australia. Other activities include Irish language classes, and crafts such as bread making and reed making.

Irish language immersion week/ weekend January 2025

Arrival, Registration & Orientation:
Arrival and registration opens at 4pm on Monday 20 Jan and there will be a school meeting/orientation at 5pm on Monday 20 Jan. For those attending for the weekend arrivals start at 4pm on Friday 24 Jan and we will do the orientation at the same time as registration.

Accommodation & Meals:
This is a residential event where all accommodation and meals are provided as part of the cost. The centre has shared rooms and shared bathrooms.

Class Levels:
Level 1 (beginners) People with no prior knowledge of Irish or who have been studying for less than one year.
Level 2 (continuing) Students who have now completed level 1 or who have studied Irish at some earlier stage in the past, for example at school.
Level 3 (intermediate) Students who have been studying for at least two years and who are now approaching the conversation stage.
Level 4 (advanced) Generally, those who are comfortable for the entire lesson to be conducted in Irish.
