With all the Oscars and St Patrick’s Day buzz happening online the Irish Film Institute in Dublin has released some classic archive films which will be of interest to Irish people (and film buffs) in Australia.

“The Oscars Archive” features Irish short films which have been nominated for Oscars in the past. My favourite is ‘Give Up Yer Aul Sins’ from Brown Bag films which is a hilarious animation created over an actual 1960s recording of Dublin children’s interpretation of bible stories. 

My favourite film from “The St Patrick’s Day Archive” is a silent newsreel of officers of the London Irish Rifles being presented with shamrocks on St Patrick’s Day 1916 at their barracks in Chelsea. Within 5 weeks all had changed utterly with the events in Dublin at Easter 1916. 
 
My other favourite from this collection is ‘Ireland’s Holy Mount’ which is a Pathé News clip from 1921 which features remarkable footage of pilgrims claiming the 764 meter high Croagh Patrick in County Mayo in their bare feet! I was lucky enough to climb Croagh Patrick last year on a beautiful sunny day and view the ‘basket of eggs’ islands in Clew Bay – but I was glad of a sturdy pair of boots!

Free Outdoor Irish Film Festival Sydney March 15-18

The Irish Film Festival have announced a program of three free Movie Nights at the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Festival 2023. Among the highlights for the very first Free Outdoor Irish Film Festival is The Commitments – plus Singalong with live band and special guest Irish drag queen Peaches Queen. To celebrate Martin McDonagh’s Oscar nominations for The Banshees of Inisherin we wind back the clock to feature McDonagh’s 2008 original black comedy, In Bruges with both Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. We are very proud to screen the the 1952 Irish classic The Quiet Man, with John Wayne’s portrayal of fighting Irish male stereotype Sean Thornton which is part cringe-inducing and part glorious legend.

The Outdoor Irish Film Festival is part of the Sydney St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival which also sees the Sydney Opera House go green on March 17th as well as a parade through The Rocks on Sunday 19th followed by a family-friendly, free festival in First Fleet Park, Customs House Square, MCA Lawn and Bligh & Barney Reserve.

Irish Film Festival Director, Dr Enda Murray said, “We are delighted to partner with the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Festival to bring this program of legendary Irish cinema to Sydney audiences. We have combined new documentaries on Irish music legends Phil Lynott and Shane McGowan with some classic comedies such as The Guard and In Bruges. Throw in The Commitments (plus
Singalong with live band) and family films such as Song of the Sea, The Quiet Man and Brooklyn and you have a great lineup of Irish culture for St. Patrick’s Day – and it’s all free!.”




Call for Papers:2nd Global Irish Diaspora Congress, Durban South Africa, 19 to 23 July 2023

On 18 January the Global Irish Diaspora Congress President, Professor Regina Uí Chollatáin, announced that the congress which had to be postponed because of Covid-19 would be held at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21 July 2023 followed by a two-day battlefield trip deep into KwaZulu-Natal to see the great battle sites of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars such as Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Talana Hill, Colenso and Spieon Kop. All of these had Irish soldiers present, sometime, as with Talana and Colenso, on opposite sides to each other.


The Global Irish Diaspora is based at University College Dublin, where the first congress was held in August 2017. That congress attracted hundreds of delegates from across the world and more than 150 papers were delivered. The 2023 Congress is the first major such Irish-Africa gathering in several decades and we invite you to attend.



As well as a wide range of papers, we are planning to have various panel sessions. These will include one on Irish communities in southern Africa and another on the life experience of Black medics who were trained in Ireland. A presentation of recently published books by Irish-South Africans and relating to Ireland and to Ireland and South Africa will also be held. The Embassy of Ireland will host an exhibition relating to Ireland’s support for the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.


As well as the academic programme, it is envisaged that delegates will have an opportunity to visit the Denis Hurley Centre and also tour Durban sites with Irish links, such as the Battle of Congella site, the Old Fort, the City Hall and Africa’s busiest harbour, once the terminus of the Belfast-built Union Castle mail ships.
