The Board and the staff of the Irish Writers’ Centre are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of treasured Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney. He was a great friend to the Centre and a huge support through the years. We remember him for his gentle nature, generosity of spirit and wonderful contribution to Irish literature. He leaves a remarkable legacy.
Seamus was a strong supporter of the Centre and participated in many of our events, most recently the Guinness World Record marathon reading on Bloomsday, 2012. On that occasion, he received a phenomenal reception from all who heard him read.
Jack Gilligan, chairman of the Centre, said: “Ireland and the world have lost a magnificent poet and a true gentleman. The Irish Writers’ Centre offers sincere condolences to his wife Marie and the entire Heaney family. We are thinking of them at this sad time.”
